Thibaut Courtois has offered a measured critique of Kylian Mbappé’s performance following Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Getafe in La Liga. Speaking to Real Madrid TV after the match, the Belgian goalkeeper commended the team’s response to their midweek Champions League setback but also highlighted areas where improvement was needed, including Mbappé’s finishing and defensive contributions.

The victory at the Santiago Bernabéu marked an important recovery for Real Madrid after their defeat to Liverpool.

Mbappé played a key role in securing the win, delivering a spectacular first-half goal assisted by Jude Bellingham. His strike gave Madrid the lead, setting the tone for a solid performance.

However, the French forward missed several clear opportunities to extend the scoreline in the second half, including two one-on-one chances.

Courtois did not shy away from acknowledging these missed opportunities, stating:

“We reacted well after Wednesday’s defeat. We could have scored two more goals, but in the second half, we forgot to play.

What is regrettable is that Kylian did not know how to convert his chances. It will come; he will score a lot. We remain focused and will see in May if it is enough for the championship.”

Emphasis on Teamwork and Defensive Commitment

Beyond his assessment of Mbappé’s attacking output, Courtois stressed the importance of collective defensive responsibility across the squad, including from forwards.

“The commitment of the whole team is essential. Whether you are a striker or a winger, all eleven have to defend,” he said. “Today we were lucky with the posts, but that is part of the game.”

The Belgian goalkeeper, who reached the milestone of his 250th appearance for Real Madrid during the match, reflected on the achievement with pride, calling it a “special moment at the best club in the world.”

Courtois’ remarks underscore the delicate balance between individual brilliance and team cohesion, particularly as Madrid look to maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.

His call for improved finishing and greater defensive solidarity serves as a reminder of the high standards required to sustain success at the elite level.
