Kylian Mbappé’s long-anticipated move to Real Madrid this summer was hailed as a destiny fulfilled.
The 25-year-old France captain, who almost joined Los Blancos in 2022 before extending his PSG stay, finally realized his childhood dream when his Paris contract expired. Despite fleeting links to Liverpool, Real Madrid’s pursuit of Mbappé was unmatched.
But not everyone sees this as a fairy tale. Former L’Équipe CEO Cyril Linette is one such skeptic. Linette believes Mbappé made the wrong choice, citing a clash with Real’s star left winger Vinícius Jr. “He’s joined a club where someone at least as good occupies his position,” Linette remarked, comparing this to his stint at PSG alongside Neymar.
Linette suggested the Premier League would have been a better fit, particularly Manchester United. “There, he could have played in his position and revived the club. At Real, who’ve won everything, I don’t see what extraordinary feats he can achieve,” he told RMC Sport.
With a central role unfamiliar to him and fierce competition on the wing, Mbappé’s Real journey is already under scrutiny—was his dream move a misstep?
