The Algerian international and AS Roma midfielder Houssem Aouar, a recent injury sustained during a UEFA Europa League match against Tiraspol Sheriff has cast doubt on his participation in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2023 in Ivory Coast.
Despite making a comeback into José Mourinho’s starting lineup against Tiraspol Sheriff on Thursday, Aouar’s joy was short-lived as he was forced to exit the pitch at half-time due to pain in his calf.
Subsequent tests have revealed an injury to his left adductor muscle, leaving the player facing an uncertain period of recovery, with initial estimates suggesting a minimum four-week absence.
The timing of Aouar’s injury poses significant challenges to his aspirations of joining the Algerian national team for the CAN 2023.
With the team set to embark on a training camp in Lomé, Togo, from January 1 to 10, followed by friendly matches, Aouar’s rehabilitation period seems insufficient for him to regain match fitness in time for the tournament.
The injury news will undoubtedly disappoint Aouar, who recently expressed his ambitious outlook for the year 2024 on AS Roma’s official website.
“I know I can help the team. I am convinced that I can contribute more, and I hope to achieve that. Unfortunately, the end of 2023 and the beginning of the next year may not align with his expectations, or those of his mentor in the Algerian national team,” he remarked.
As the national team gears up for the CAN 2023, Aouar’s absence would be a significant blow, prompting the coaching staff to explore alternative options.
The psychological impact on Aouar, who demonstrated eagerness and determination to make a mark in his new environment at AS Roma, adds an additional layer of disappointment to this unfortunate chapter in his career.
