Peterborough United determined to secure Kwame Poku’s future amid standout League one season
Peterborough United are working tirelessly to extend the contract of their prolific forward Kwame Poku, whose exceptional performances in the 2024/25 EFL League One campaign have marked him as one of the division’s standout players. Poku, described as “unplayable” by Peterborough’s coaching staff, is in the final year of his current contract, and the club faces an uphill battle to retain his services beyond this season.
The 23-year-old Ghanaian has been a revelation in League One, consistently delivering impactful performances for Peterborough United.
His remarkable form continued on Saturday, when he scored a hat-trick in Peterborough’s commanding 6-1 victory over Cambridge United.
This latest feat propelled Poku to the top of the League One scoring chart, where he currently boasts 10 goals and five assists from 15 matches.
His impressive stats make him the most involved player in goal contributions across England’s top four tiers this season.
Poku’s exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed, with the forward collecting the League One Player of the Month award for both September and October.
Should he maintain this trajectory, Poku could become the first player in history to claim the award for three consecutive months, a feat now within his reach given League One’s lighter fixture load in November due to international breaks and FA Cup rounds.
Peterborough United’s management is well aware of the player’s value and is eager to secure Poku’s future with the club.
Speaking about the importance of keeping Poku, Peterborough’s manager said, “The boy is unplayable at the moment; he’s just so good.
He deserves all the plaudits and all the credit.” He added, “That’s why we had to keep him in the summer.
There were offers for him, and there will be more offers.
We’re trying to keep him and have offered him a new contract. Me and the chairman are trying our best, but it will be very tough—and you can see why.”
Although Poku’s contract runs out in June, Peterborough could still command compensation due to his age, as he will be under 24.
This offers the club some leverage, but with his growing reputation, holding on to Poku beyond this season will be a challenge.
Poku’s manager was quick to emphasize that the team’s success is a collective effort, noting that while Poku’s contributions have been extraordinary, Saturday’s win was the result of a comprehensive team performance.
If you watch him, the stats don’t lie. I’m just enjoying working with the boy.
He will admit, though, that it wasn’t just about him yesterday as it was a very good team performance,” he remarked.
With offers for Poku expected to flood in, Peterborough United’s fight to retain their star forward is far from over.
The club will need to navigate a competitive market to keep one of League One’s brightest talents on their roster as they push for promotion.
