Sudan faces key AFCON qualifier against Niger without three key players
The Sudan national football team is facing a challenging situation ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Niger, with three of their standout players suspended due to accumulated yellow cards.
The Sudan Football Federation confirmed that coach Kwasi Appiah will be without the services of goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Mustafa, defender Ahmed Abdel Moneim Tabanga, and midfielder Wali Al-Din Khader Pogba for the upcoming match in the fifth round of qualifiers for the 2025 AFCON.
These absences are a significant blow for “Soqour Al-Jidyan,” who are looking to secure a positive result that would guarantee their place in the tournament finals in Morocco.
Despite the setbacks, Coach Appiah is working to ensure the team remains competitive, focusing on preparing suitable replacements for the suspended trio.
The coaching staff, including physical trainer Ihab Abu Idris and goalkeeper coach Eric Kjek, has devised a special training program for the suspended players to maintain their fitness levels ahead of the next round, which will see Sudan face Angola.
Currently sitting in second place in Group 2 with seven points, Sudan needs only a draw against Niger to confirm their qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
The team’s journey to Morocco has been arduous, having traveled from Tanzania via Cameroon, and they will hold a preparatory camp in Rabat before the crucial match.
As part of their preparations, the squad is expected to be reinforced by players based in foreign leagues, as the team looks to secure the result that will seal their spot in the 35th edition of the prestigious African tournament.
