The official draw for the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 has set the stage for an intense competition, with Nigeria’s Edo Queens pitted against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in Group B. The draw took place on Friday, October 18, at the Complex Mohamed VI in Salé, Morocco, where eight of Africa’s top women’s football clubs learned their paths to continental glory.
The tournament, scheduled to run from November 9 to 23, will be hosted in Morocco and features clubs from across the continent competing for one of Africa’s most prestigious titles in women’s club football.
In addition to the honor of being crowned champions, the winners will take home a prize of $400,000, while the runners-up will receive $250,000.
The draw, conducted by Fatiha Laasiri, a former Moroccan international and current assistant coach of the U23 Morocco Women’s National Team, placed teams into two groups of four.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages.
Group A, headlined by hosts and 2022 champions AS FAR, looks formidable.
Joining them are two debutant teams from Senegal, Aigles De La Medina, and South Africa’s University of Western Cape.
TP Mazembe from DR Congo rounds out the group, making their return after missing out on the previous edition.
Group B, however, is shaping up to be particularly competitive.
South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, aiming for a record-tying third consecutive title, find themselves up against three debutants eager to make their mark on the competition.
Nigeria’s Edo Queens, fresh off their WAFU B title victory, are brimming with confidence but will face stiff competition from Ethiopia’s CBE FC and Egypt’s Tutankhamun.
Edo Queens’ first test will come against the powerful Mamelodi Sundowns side, known for their dominance in women’s football.
Sundowns are looking to add to their already impressive collection of silverware and will be determined to maintain their continental supremacy.
However, the Nigerian side is determined to prove their worth, with the likes of star players and a strong tactical setup that helped them secure their place in the tournament.
The group also features CBE FC from Ethiopia, who have been steadily building their reputation in women’s football, and Tutankhamun FC of Egypt, both of whom will be determined to prove themselves on their Champions League debut.
This year’s tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of African women’s football, with seasoned champions like Mamelodi Sundowns clashing against ambitious newcomers such as Edo Queens.
For the Nigerian team, advancing from Group B will require resilience and tactical discipline against some of the toughest opponents in the competition.
