Egyptian defender Ramy Rabia has vowed that his side will not be playing for a draw when they face Mauritania in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. Despite needing just one point to secure their place at the 2025 tournament, Rabia insists Egypt will aim for victory to bring joy to their passionate supporters.

In their last match, Egypt secured a 2-0 win over Mauritania, marking their third consecutive triumph in the AFCON qualifiers.

This victory has left Egypt with nine points and positioned them on the verge of qualification, with three games still to play.

One more point would guarantee Egypt’s place in the tournament, but Rabia is adamant that the team will not let their foot off the gas.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Rabia highlighted the importance of maintaining a winning mentality: “Our aim was to bring joy to the fans and secure the win early.

Recently, fans have become used to us taking the lead in the first half.

Mauritania is a strong, well-organized team that closed the spaces effectively, making it a difficult match.”

Rabia went on to praise Mauritania’s defensive structure, emphasizing the competitive nature of modern football.

“There are no weak teams,” he noted. “All players are professionals, and we must respect every opponent.

Mauritania is physically strong and organized, and we tried multiple ways to break through their defense.”

Reflecting on Egypt’s performance and tactical approach, Rabia explained that patience was key to their success.

“At halftime, we talked about staying calm and waiting patiently for the goal to come.

We won’t approach it with the mindset that we only need a point to qualify, we’ll play to win,” he said.

The defender stressed the significance of each match for Egypt, particularly with AFCON qualification at stake.

“Every match is like a tournament for us, and with one game left to secure qualification, we must win because we represent Egypt,” Rabia added.

With Egypt preparing for the return leg against Mauritania on Tuesday, October 15, the pressure will be on to deliver another strong performance.

The match, set to kick off at 7 PM Cairo time, offers Egypt the chance to solidify their place at AFCON 2025 and continue their winning streak.

Mauritania, who struggled to contain Egypt in the first leg, will undoubtedly be looking for a stronger showing.

However, Rabia’s comments suggest that the Egyptian squad is fully focused on securing another victory and not merely coasting through to qualification.

In an exclusive interview, the Togo international said he has a point to prove this term after struggling for game time under former coach Thierry Froger. “I feel good compared to last year when I played very little and the coach had very little confidence in me,” the 28-year-old told AfricaSoccer.com. “Today, I have all the cards in hand to prove my talent. It was up to me to show him and everyone else that I was better than that.” Amewou believes new manager Victor Zvunka, who returned

Algerian Ligue 1: JS Kabylie held as Algiers derby ends in stalemate

JS Kabylie were forced to settle for a point in their second Algerian Ligue 1 outing of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Ben Aknoun on Sunday, while the Algiers derby between MC Alger and USM Alger ended goalless. The Tizi Ouzou giants looked set to secure their first win of the campaign when Ryad Boudebouz put them ahead in the 37th minute. The veteran midfielder struck with trademark composure to give JSK a deserved lead after a period of pressure. But their advantage proved short-lived. Just minutes later, Abdeljalil Saad brought the hosts level, punishing defensive lapses to restore parity before half-time. Despite enjoying long

Ismaïla Sarr continued his fine start to the Premier League season with another crucial goal as Crystal Palace secured an emphatic 3-0 victory away to Aston Villa on Sunday. His pace and direct play once again proved decisive as the Eagles registered their first win of the campaign. 2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Egypt announce squad without Mohamed Abdelmonem as Amr El-Gazar earns first call-up

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has named his 25-man squad for the September 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, with Mohamed Abdelmonem missing out through injury and Amr El-Gazar handed his first senior call-up. The Pharaohs sit comfortably at the top of Group A with 16 points from six matches and approach the upcoming fixtures with confidence. Led by captain Mohamed Salah and supported in attack by Omar Marmoush, Egypt are edging closer to confirming their place at the World Cup in North America. Abdelmonem’s absence, caused by a serious knee injury, is a major setback for Hassan’s defensive plans. Yasser Ibrahim and Mohamed Shehata are also unavailable,

Senegalese striker Boulaye Dia strikes as Lazio sweep aside Verona in Serie A

Boulaye Dia opened his account for the season as Lazio cruised to a convincing 4-0 victory over Hellas Verona on Sunday in the second round of Serie A fixtures. The Senegalese striker, who joined Lazio after his stint with Villarreal, netted the final goal of the contest to seal an emphatic win for Maurizio Sarri’s side.
