Marseille furious over Benatia’s six-game ban after referee incident
Olympique de Marseille’s sporting director and former Moroccan international, Mehdi Benatia, has been handed a six-match suspension by the French Professional Football League’s disciplinary committee, with three of those games suspended.
The decision follows Benatia’s heated criticism of the refereeing during Marseille’s recent clash against Lyon in the fifth round of Ligue 1.
The incident in question occurred as Benatia confronted match official Benoît while heading to the locker room, expressing his dissatisfaction with the decisions made during the match.
His actions prompted the disciplinary committee to summon him for a hearing last Wednesday, which ultimately led to the decision to impose a ban.
Reacting swiftly to the ruling, Olympique de Marseille released a statement on Thursday, condemning the suspension. The club voiced strong disapproval of the punishment, describing it as surprising and unreasonable.
The statement read: “The sanction is unexpected and disproportionate to what transpired. Marseille will continue to raise its voice in defense of its rights.”
The suspension of Benatia, who only recently took up the role of sporting director at Marseille, has stirred significant controversy within the club.
His presence has been influential, and his passion for the game is well-known, making this disciplinary action a bitter pill for both him and the club to swallow.
Benatia’s criticism of the officiating in the Marseille-Lyon encounter appears to have struck a nerve with the league’s disciplinary body.
The decision to impose such a suspension, even partially suspended, signals the French Professional Football League’s strict stance against any verbal confrontations with match officials.
Olympique de Marseille is now left to navigate this turbulent period without their sporting director fully available.
The ban is set to affect Benatia’s ability to be present at key fixtures, limiting his influence on the team from the sidelines.
The club’s insistence on challenging the ruling indicates a determination to not let the matter rest quietly.
This situation has once again brought the relationship between referees and club officials into the spotlight.
The tension between the need for respectful communication with match officials and the right of clubs to express legitimate concerns has often been a fine line to tread.
For Benatia and Marseille, this case will likely resonate well beyond the suspension period, as both the club and the league continue to navigate the delicate balance between discipline and expression.
As the fallout from this decision continues, many Marseille supporters are rallying behind Benatia, seeing the suspension as overly harsh for what they believe was a genuine concern about the quality of officiating.
The coming weeks will reveal whether Marseille’s challenge to the ruling can bring about a reconsideration or if the league will stand firm on its decision.
