Kenya vs Zimbabwe: confirmed line-ups for AFCON 2025 qualifier
Kenya’s Harambee Stars begin their journey to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a crucial Group J clash against Zimbabwe. The match takes place at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Uganda on Friday, but Kenya’s head coach, Engin Firat, faces significant challenges with several key players unavailable due to injury.
Among the absentees are right-back Daniel Anyembe, who plays for Viborg FF in the Danish Superliga, and Bristol City defender Zak Vyner.
Serbian-based midfielder Collins Sichenje, who plays for Vojvodina, has also been ruled out.
These injuries have forced Firat to make adjustments to his squad as they look to make a strong start to their qualification campaign.
The biggest concern for Kenya, however, is the fitness of star striker and captain Michael Olunga.
The Al Duhail SC forward, who plays in Qatar’s top division, remains doubtful for the encounter after sustaining an injury during a recent league match.
His potential absence could leave a significant void in Kenya’s attacking force.
In addition, forward Masoud Juma, who currently plays for Saudi Arabian Division One side Al Jabalain, and winger Ayub Timbe have been sidelined for the long term and did not travel with the team to Uganda.
This leaves Kenya without two of their experienced attacking options, forcing Firat to rely on alternative strategies.
Kenya’s Starting XI
Despite these setbacks, Kenya will take to the field with a solid line-up.
Bryne Omondi starts in goal, with a defensive backline featuring Alphonce Omija, Erick Ouma, captain Joseph Okumu, and Sylvester Owino.
In midfield, Richard Odada, Anthony Akumu, and Rooney Onyango will look to control the tempo of the game.
Austin Odhiambo, Duke Abuya, and Eric Johana complete the starting eleven, tasked with providing offensive creativity and support.
Zimbabwe’s Starting XI
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, enter the contest with a formidable team led by captain Marshall Munetsi.
The midfield is anchored by Munetsi, who will be supported by Andy Rinomhota and Walter Musona.
Up front, the attacking threat comes from Khama Billiat, Tawanda Chirewa, and Prince Dube, all looking to test Kenya’s defense.
The Warriors will have Washington Arubi between the posts, while the defense will feature Godknows Murwira, Munashe Garan’anga, Gerald Takwara, and Jordan Zemura, aiming to keep Kenya’s forwards at bay.
