Benin’s football scene is abuzz as Dadjè FC, the reigning vice-champion and one of the country’s representatives in the CAF Cup preliminaries, finally began their training on August 5. Captain Ghislain Ahoudo and his teammates took to the field at Aplahoué stadium, gearing up for their imminent clash against Nigeria’s El Kanemi Warriors in the first leg of the CAF Cup’s first round.

The start of Dadjè FC’s preparation was significantly delayed, much to the dismay of their supporters and the wider Beninese sporting community.

While other clubs participating in continental competitions had resumed their training weeks earlier, Dadjè FC only began their sessions 13 days before their critical match against El Kanemi Warriors.

The delay was attributed to unresolved financial issues, including unpaid salary arrears and match bonuses, which the players had demanded to be settled before commencing pre-season activities.

The financial struggles that beset Dadjè FC came to a head, leading to a standoff between the players and the club’s management.

It wasn’t until August 2 that the financial issues were partially addressed, allowing the club to schedule their first training session on August 5.

This situation has cast a spotlight on the financial instability within the club, which could have repercussions on their performance in the upcoming fixtures.

In addition to resolving financial disputes, Dadjè FC has also seen a change in their coaching staff. Patrick Agbegninou, who led the team to a commendable second-place finish in the Super League Pro during his interim tenure, has stepped down.

The club has appointed Ivorian coach Yaya Koné as the new head coach. Koné, a CAF A License holder, brings a wealth of experience, having previously managed AS Douanes du Burkina Faso and led them to a National Cup victory in 2022.

As Dadjè FC embarks on their CAF Cup campaign, the pressure is on for the new coach and the team. Koné’s immediate challenge will be to prepare the team for their first leg match against El Kanemi Warriors on August 18 in Maiduguri.

The return leg will be held on August 24 at the General Mathieu Kerekou Stadium in Cotonou. The team’s performance in these matches will be crucial for their progression in the tournament.

The players and the new coaching staff face a daunting task ahead, but the return to training marks a positive step forward.

With the financial issues partially resolved and a new coach in place, Dadjè FC hopes to channel their focus on the pitch and deliver a performance that will make their supporters proud.

In conclusion, while the journey to the CAF Cup preliminaries has been fraught with challenges, Dadjè FC’s determination to compete and succeed remains undeterred.

The upcoming matches will not only test their skills but also their resilience and unity as a team.
