Rivers United has officially dismissed recent speculation linking them with former Super Eagles coach, Finidi George. The Port Harcourt-based club has stated unequivocally that no discussions have taken place with George regarding a coaching role.
Finidi George, who is currently unattached after his departure from the Super Eagles, has been rumored to be in talks with various clubs for a potential return to coaching.
Among these clubs, Rivers United was notably mentioned, following their decision to part ways with their coach just before the season ended.
However, Charles Mayuku, the Media Manager for Rivers United, has debunked these rumors.
“We have heard about Finidi George, we have heard about Imama Amapakabo, we will soon hear about Jose Mourinho. These are just rumors.
We resume training on Wednesday for next season,” Mayuku told Punch, highlighting the speculative nature of the reports.
In addition to addressing the rumors surrounding Finidi George, Mayuku provided insights into Rivers United’s preparations for the upcoming season.
The club is set to resume training on Wednesday, with a squad of 24 players. Among these, 13 players have reached the end of their contracts, and the club is actively engaged in negotiations to renew their agreements.
“At the moment, we have 13 players who are at the end of their contracts, including Nyima Nwagua, Kazie Enyinnaya, Victor Sochima, and Abiodun Akande.
The club is renegotiating with them before we resume on Wednesday. We have retained 24 players, including five promoted from our U-17 team,” Mayuku added.
Rivers United’s focus on player retention and renewal of contracts indicates a strategic approach to maintaining stability and continuity within the team.
The negotiations with key players such as Nyima Nwagua, Kazie Enyinnaya, Victor Sochima, and Abiodun Akande are crucial for ensuring the team’s competitive edge in the forthcoming season.
The promotion of five players from the U-17 team also reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent and integrating them into the senior squad.
This blend of experienced players and emerging talents is expected to bolster Rivers United’s performance in the next season.
Rivers United’s clear denial of any contact with Finidi George puts an end to the swirling rumors and speculation.
As the club gears up for the new season, its focus remains on solidifying its current squad and preparing thoroughly for the challenges ahead.
With contract renewals underway and new talent being promoted, Rivers United is poised to approach the upcoming season with renewed vigor and a cohesive team strategy.
