2026 World Cup qualifiers: Cameroon held to draw by Angola
Cameroon’s World Cup qualifying campaign faced a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola in their Group D encounter on Tuesday. This result, coming just three days after their emphatic 4-1 victory over Cape Verde, leaves the Indomitable Lions with only a one-point lead over Cape Verde and Libya.
Early Excitement
The match began with high intensity. Angola’s Randy Nteka made an early impact in the 4th minute, maneuvering into the box and launching a shot that was expertly blocked by Cameroon’s André-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
Cameroon quickly retaliated with an offensive move of their own, leading to a corner.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Bryan Mbeumo capitalized on a cross from Christian Bassogog.
Mbeumo, aided by a fortunate deflection off Vincent Aboubakar, slotted the ball home to give Cameroon an early lead.
Cameroon’s Early Dominance
Riding the momentum from their previous match, Cameroon pressed forward in search of a second goal.
Christian Bassogog orchestrated several attacking plays, but the finishing touch was lacking. Mbeumo’s effort in the 17th minute went off target, missing the chance to extend their lead.
Angola’s Response
Angola gradually found their rhythm, responding with several promising attacks. Mabululu’s header from a right-wing cross in the 20th minute was one of their first clear opportunities.
Gelson Dala also tested Cameroon’s defense with a low shot that was comfortably saved by André Onana.
Second Half Surge
The second half saw Angola come out with renewed vigor. They piled pressure on the Cameroonian defense, with Manuel Benson and Gelson Dala both coming close to scoring.
The equalizer came in the 54th minute when Michael Ngadeu inadvertently deflected a cross from Gelson Dala into his own net, leveling the score at 1-1.
Stalemate
Cameroon pushed to regain their lead, with attempts from Carlos Baleba and Vincent Aboubakar, but they couldn’t find the decisive goal.
Despite their efforts, the match ended in a draw, a result that leaves Cameroon at the top of Group D, but only just.
Group D Standings
With this draw, Cameroon remains first in Group D with 8 points, just one ahead of Cape Verde and Libya, who both have 7 points. Angola holds fourth place, ahead of Mauritius and Eswatini, who are at the bottom of the group.
This draw emphasizes the unpredictable nature of the World Cup qualifiers and sets the stage for a thrilling continuation of the campaign.
The Indomitable Lions will need to regroup and refine their strategy as they prepare for their next challenges in the quest for a place in the 2026 World Cup
