Gambia secured their first points in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with a 5-1 victory over Seychelles on Saturday. The match, relocated to Berkane, Morocco, marked a significant turnaround for the Scorpions following their initial defeats against Ivory Coast and Burundi.

Despite recent struggles, Gambia showcased their potential in a game that saw them initially challenged.

Early on, Badamosi opened the scoring in the 10th minute, only for Henriette to equalize for Seychelles just four minutes later.

However, the Scorpions regained their composure and dominance in the second half.

Second-Half Surge

The turning point came shortly after the break when Gambia was awarded a penalty.

The ever-reliable Musa Barrow converted from the spot in the 52nd minute, putting Gambia back in the lead.

This goal ignited a flurry of action, with Minteh scoring just three minutes later to extend the advantage.

Badamosi, who had opened the scoring, struck again in the 66th minute, completing his brace and putting the game firmly out of Seychelles’ reach.

Sidibeh added the final flourish with a goal in the 78th minute, sealing a comprehensive win for the Scorpions.

A Promising Start for McKinstry

This match marked a successful debut for Gambia’s new head coach, Johnny McKinstry.

The Northern Irishman’s influence was evident as he guided the team to a much-needed victory, lifting their spirits and their standing in Group F.

Despite still being 5th in the group, Gambia is now just one point behind Kenya and Burundi, and three points behind Gabon, their next opponent.

With Ivory Coast holding a significant lead at the top of the group, Gambia’s realistic target is to secure second place.

This would require consistent performances in their upcoming matches, starting with a crucial game against Gabon on Tuesday.

Looking Ahead

Gambia’s resounding win not only revitalizes their World Cup campaign but also sets a positive tone for the remainder of the qualifiers.

The team’s newfound confidence under McKinstry’s leadership could prove pivotal as they aim to climb the group standings.

The Scorpions’ next challenge against Gabon is set to be a decisive encounter.

A victory there could propel Gambia into a stronger position, bringing them closer to the coveted second spot in Group F and keeping their World Cup dreams alive.

As the qualifiers progress, Gambia will need to maintain their momentum and build on this significant victory.

With their spirits high and their strategy clicking into place, the Scorpions are poised to make a determined push in the quest for a World Cup berth.
