The CAF African Schools Football Championship (CECAFA) qualifiers, Uganda asserted its dominance on Wednesday, December 13, in Nairobi, Kenya, clinching victory in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.
With six teams participating in the boys’ category and five in the girls’, the CECAFA qualifiers witnessed an intense battle for supremacy, ultimately concluding with Uganda emerging triumphant in both divisions.
The girls’ final saw Uganda triumph over Kenya with a scoreline of 2-1. Despite conceding an early goal from a free kick, the Ugandan team showcased resilience, staging a comeback to equalize before half-time and ultimately securing the lead in the second half.
This victory ensures Uganda’s representation in the continental final phase of the championship, scheduled for April 2024.
In a closely contested boys’ final against Tanzania, Uganda secured their ticket to the continental phase of the African school football championship.
The match concluded in a 1-1 draw, leading to a decisive penalty shootout where Uganda emerged victorious with a score of 4-2.
Individual excellence was also recognized, with Simon Wanyama from Uganda earning the accolade of the boys’ top scorer, while his compatriot Achraf Kyakuwa was named the best player of the tournament.
These outstanding achievements underscore Uganda’s prowess in school football, positioning them as formidable contenders in the upcoming continental finals.
