Tobias Knost and new faces in Kenya’s squad for World Cup qualifiers
Kenya’s national football team coach, Engin Firat, has unveiled a provisional squad brimming with fresh talent ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Burundi. Among the notable inclusions are several new faces, including Tobias Knost, who previously played for Germany’s U18 team.
With less than a month to go before the Harambee Stars face the African champions and Burundi, Firat has injected new energy into the team by calling up three debutants.
These players, who have never before donned the national team jersey, are poised to bring fresh dynamics to the squad.
The newcomers, announced on May 20, 2024, include Tobias Knost, Adam Wilson Ayiro, Bruce Kamau, Brian Okoth, and John Ochieng.
Diverse Talents Join the Ranks
Tobias Knost, a 24-year-old right back currently playing for SC Verl 1924 in Germany, headlines the list of fresh recruits.
Eligible to play for Kenya despite his German nationality, Knost has already made 16 appearances for his club this season.
His international experience with Germany’s U18 team is expected to bolster Kenya’s defensive lineup.
Another exciting addition is Bradford City striker Adam Wilson Ayiro. Having previously represented England’s U18 team, Ayiro’s inclusion marks his first call-up to the Harambee Stars.
His striking prowess will be a valuable asset as Kenya aims to secure crucial victories in the upcoming qualifiers.
Homegrown Talent and International Experience
Firat’s squad also features local talents and players from the Zambian league.
Brian Okoth, a defender from Kenya Police FC, and John Ochieng, who plays for Zanaco FC in Zambia, have both earned their first national team call-ups.
At just 20 years old, Ochieng’s rapid rise from the U20s to the senior team underscores his potential and promise.
The Bruce Kamau Surprise
Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Bruce Kamau. After eight years of declining national team invitations, Kamau has finally agreed to represent Kenya.
The Perth Glory striker, based in Australia, brings a wealth of experience from the A-League, where he has made 20 appearances this season.
Kamau’s decision to join the Harambee Stars adds significant firepower to Firat’s attacking options.
These strategic selections by Firat reflect a blend of youth, experience, and international pedigree, aiming to enhance Kenya’s performance on the global stage.
As the Harambee Stars prepare for their matches against Ivory Coast and Burundi, the inclusion of these new faces is set to invigorate the squad and bolster their chances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
