Igor Vetokele, the promising young Belgian talent, has decided to represent Angola, his country of origin, after being left out of Marc Wilmots’ World Cup squad. The Copenhagen striker announced on Twitter that he will be participating in two friendly matches with the Angola national team against Morocco and Iran.
Starting his professional career at Cercle de Bruges before moving to Denmark, Vetokele has been part of various Belgian youth teams since 2009, including the U17, U18, U19, and U21 squads, playing around fifty matches. His decision to join the Angola national team marks a significant step towards representing the Palancas Negras.
Born in Luanda, the capital of Angola, Vetokele was trained in Ghent and has scored 13 goals in the Superligaen for Copenhagen this season. He also made appearances in the Champions League. With an impressive season under his belt, the former Bruges player has caught the attention of RC Genk.
