Christopher Katongo, the Zambian footballer and captain of the national team, was named the winner of the BBC Trophy for Best African Footballer of the Year. This recognition comes after Katongo led Zambia to victory in the 2012 African Cup of Nations (CAN). The other nominees for the award were Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré from Ivory Coast, Demba Ba from Senegal, and Younès Belhanda from Morocco.
