Stéphane Mbia and Sevilla FC clinched the Europa League title this Wednesday after a dramatic penalty shootout victory (4-2) over Portuguese side Benfica Lisbon.
In a tightly contested match that saw no goals scored in regulation time and extra time, Sevilla emerged victorious in the shootout.
For Mbia, the triumph represents a significant achievement before he joins up with the Cameroon national team for the World Cup. The former Marseille player played a crucial role throughout the tournament, including scoring a crucial goal in added time during the semi-finals against FC Valencia.
Sevilla’s victory marks their third Europa League triumph, adding to their previous titles in 2006 and 2007. The Spanish club has a perfect record in Europa League finals, never having lost in the ultimate match of the competition.
With this win, Sevilla joins the ranks of elite clubs such as Juventus, Inter Milan, and Liverpool as one of the four clubs to have won the competition three times.
