Celebrations across France following Senegal’s victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final led to widespread public order incidents, resulting in 63 arrests and multiple injuries among police officers.
The French Ministry of the Interior reported that the disturbances occurred after Senegal defeated Morocco in extra time, with fans gathering spontaneously in several cities, including Paris, Lyon, and Avignon.
What began as celebrations quickly escalated, prompting law enforcement to intervene to restore order.
“On January 18, following the victory of the Senegalese team in the AFCON final, spontaneous gatherings of supporters were observed.
These gatherings, initially celebratory, generated limited public order disturbances, particularly in the Paris region, Lyon, and Avignon, requiring systematic intervention by law enforcement. 63 arrests were made. 14 police officers sustained minor injuries,” the ministry said in a statement reported by BFM TV.
The incidents underscore how football celebrations, particularly following major international triumphs, can sometimes spill over into disorder.
Authorities emphasised that the majority of supporters behaved peacefully, but the actions of a minority led to clashes with police and subsequent arrests.
Senegal’s 2025 AFCON triumph was hard-fought, marked by controversy and tension on the field.
A disallowed goal, a late penalty awarded to Morocco, and a dispute over the Senegalese goalkeeper’s towel contributed to a dramatic match.
Off-field tensions also mirrored the on-field drama, with Senegal coach Pape Thiaw cancelling his post-match press conference after a heated confrontation with journalists.
The events in France highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement during large, spontaneous gatherings linked to international sports events.
Police were deployed systematically to manage crowds, contain violence, and prevent escalation in urban centres where large numbers of supporters congregated.
While the majority of Senegalese fans celebrated responsibly, the arrests serve as a reminder of the thin line between public celebration and public disorder.
Authorities are expected to review the incidents as part of ongoing efforts to improve crowd management during major sporting events.
