2030 World Cup Final: Spanish FA boss Lozan Softens stresses commitment to working with Morocco

Rafael Lozan, president of the Spanish Football Federation, has eased his earlier stance on Spain hosting the final of the 2030 World Cup, stepping back from definitive claims and instead highlighting Spain’s readiness to host the showpiece without insisting on exclusivity.

His comments come against the backdrop of the joint bid involving Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

Lozan’s recalibrated tone emerged during a sporting event held in the city of Alhama de Murcia, where he underlined Spain’s central role within the tripartite bid.

He explained that Spain is responsible for the largest share of the organisational project, estimated at 55 percent, drawing on its historical experience as well as its logistical and human capacity to stage major international events.

The shift follows widespread controversy earlier in the week after Lozan’s remarks at the Sports Press Association awards ceremony in Madrid.

On that occasion, he declared that Spain “will lead the 2030 World Cup” and that the final “will be held on Spanish soil,” statements that were widely interpreted as a premature decision on an issue still subject to agreement among the three partner nations.

This adjustment in rhetoric appears to reflect an awareness of the sensitivities surrounding the joint bid and a desire to preserve balanced relations with Morocco and Portugal. The 2030 World Cup project is fundamentally built on partnership, with shared responsibilities and coordinated roles among the co-hosts.

In further comments, Lozan reiterated that Spain had been the driving force behind the bid from its earliest stages, arguing that the country carries “the greatest organisational weight” and is well placed to defend the global standing of Spanish football through its infrastructure and event management experience.

He also revealed that a preliminary list of 20 Spanish cities has been drawn up as potential hosts for World Cup matches. According to Lozan, work is ongoing to narrow the list and determine the final host cities in line with FIFA’s requirements.

He maintained that the ultimate success of the 2030 World Cup will depend on effective coordination and integration between Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
