2026 World Cup: Wilfried Zaha ends Charlotte FC spell early following snub

Wilfried Zaha has brought his time at Charlotte FC to an early end, departing the Major League Soccer side during the competition’s World Cup break and heading back to parent club Galatasaray.

The forward confirmed his exit on Sunday, with the timing influenced by the league pause and his personal international setback after being left out of the Ivory Coast squad for the tournament.

Zaha’s loan agreement had been extended to run until June 30, but Charlotte FC’s schedule means they will not resume competitive action until mid-July. That gap effectively opened the door for the 31-year-old to leave earlier than planned and rejoin his Turkish club as preparations continue elsewhere.

Return to Galatasaray after loan spell

The Ivorian forward now returns to Galatasaray, where he remains under contract, after spending a season in the United States. His move to MLS was initially seen as an opportunity for a fresh start and consistent minutes away from European pressure, with Charlotte FC offering him a central role in their attack.

While his departure was anticipated in contractual terms, the broader context of his exit has been shaped by disappointment on the international stage, with his omission from Ivory Coast’s World Cup squad adding emotional weight to the decision to step away from MLS early.

Mixed spell in Major League Soccer

Zaha’s time in Charlotte produced a blend of productive moments and inconsistency. Across 46 appearances in all competitions, he registered 13 goals and 14 assists, numbers that underline his influence in the final third even when performances fluctuated.

There were matches in which his direct running and creativity proved decisive, helping Charlotte unlock tight games and add attacking variety. However, sustaining that impact over a full campaign remained a challenge, as the team itself also struggled for consistency during the season.

Despite the ups and downs, Zaha’s presence drew attention throughout the league, with expectations often high given his Premier League background and reputation as one of the most skilful forwards to emerge from English football in recent years.

Message of gratitude and reflection

Following confirmation of his departure, Zaha took to social media to reflect on his experience in North Carolina and thank the club and its supporters for their reception during his stay.

“The moment has come to say goodbye but I just wanted to thank Charlotte, the city, for welcoming me and my family with open arms and allowing me to fall in love with the game again. There’s been many highs and many lows but it’s about the journey in the end and I loved every minute,” Zaha wrote on Instagram.

His words underlined a sense of appreciation for the environment he experienced in MLS, even as his exit arrives at a moment marked by international disappointment and another transition in his club career.
