Mauritania held Togo to a pulsating 2-2 draw in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday afternoon.
The national teams of the two countries locked horns in Round 5 of the qualification games in Group B.
In the match played at Stade de Kegue in Lome, both national teams went into the game determined to secure a win to improve their chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup.
The game plan of Togo paid off as early as the fourth minute in the first half when Thibault Klidje scored after he was assisted by Atte Youssifou.
That goal separated the two teams at halftime with Togo feeling a win would be possible at full time.
However, two quick goals from Aboubakar KoitAa and Abdallahi Mahmoud in the first ten minutes of the second half turned the game around for Mauritania, giving the side a 2-1 win.
Shocked after the quick turnaround, Togo had to sit up and fight to get back into the game.
Fortunately, time was on their side. Ahoueke Steeve Kevin Denkey equalised in the 69th minute to force the match to end in a 2-2 draw.
The result leaves Togo and Mauritania in the 4th and 5th positions respectively in Group B.
