2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy rallies teammates to stay focused after win against D.R Congo
Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has charged his teammates to stay grounded in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following a crucial 3-2 comeback victory against D.R. Congo on Tuesday evening.
The former Chelsea shot-stopper was in the post for the Teranga Lions on the matchday and conceded twice in the first 33 minutes.
Despite being pegged behind, Édouard Mendy and his compatriots managed to come from behind to secure a 3-2 victory at the end of the contest.
Speaking in a post-match interview, Mendy commended the Senegal players for their efforts but stressed that it is important for players to stay focused and fight for the remaining six points in the qualifiers to seal their ticket to the World Cup.
“We’re proud because it was a match where we had to show a lot of character, and that’s what we did. Trailing 2-0 in the first half on their only two chances, they punished us.
“Afterwards, we showed calm and character to turn the situation around. That puts us in front, but it’s not over yet: we have to take the remaining six points,” Édouard Mendy said after the game.
Now top of Group B with 18 points, two more than D.R. Congo, Senegal will regroup for games against South Sudan and Mauritania in October to complete the qualification campaign.
