2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Niger thump Congo 3-1 to move to second place in Group E
Niger have moved to second in Group E with a convincing 3-1 victory against Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In the match played on Wednesday, Daniel Sosah opened the scoring for Niger just before halftime, finding the net in added time after being set up by Rahim Alhassane. Youssef Oumarou doubled the lead four minutes into the second half, converting from a Victorien Adebayor assist.
Adebayor then turned from provider to scorer in the 67th minute, combining brilliantly with Oumarou to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond doubt.
Congo managed a late consolation goal through Deo Bassinga in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Niger from claiming all three points.
The win lifts Niger to second place in Group E as they continue their push for a historic World Cup qualification.
The win also means Niger have bagged six points in their last two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Unfortunately, their late surge is not enough to secure automatic qualification to next year’s mundial. Morocco, top of the table with 21 points, has earned the automatic qualification to the tournament.
