2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Niger coach Badou Zaki faces emotional test against Morocco

Niger head coach Badou Zaki has admitted to feeling mixed emotions ahead of his side’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Morocco in Rabat.

The Ménas will face the Atlas Lions on Matchday 7 at the newly rebuilt Moulay Abdellah Stadium, a fixture that carries both personal and professional significance for Zaki, who once managed Morocco’s national team.

“Of course, these are feelings I’ve experienced only once before, in the first leg, and now they are happening again,” Zaki told Kooora.

“I never imagined a day would come when I would face my own country in a match that could decide its path to the World Cup. But this is football, and I must adapt to my role.”

The Moroccan tactician highlighted the significance of the occasion, not only for the hosts but also for his team.

“For Moroccans, this match means a lot. It’s the inauguration of one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world, a step closer to World Cup qualification, and a long-awaited return to Rabat.

“For us, it’s a great challenge. There’s no better test than competing against Africa’s strongest team, in front of their fans, to measure our level.”

Zaki acknowledged the gulf in quality between the two sides but believes his players can take inspiration from their spirited display in Oujda, where they held Morocco until the closing stages before conceding late.

“The differences are big, but we’ll try to replicate that performance. I expect an exciting match.”

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
