In a sudden turn of events, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has confirmed that the scheduled World Cup 2026 qualifying match between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea will not take place.
The game, due on Thursday at 16:00 GMT at Bingu National Stadium, was called off due to unforeseen travel complications faced by the visiting side.
FAM expressed regret for the disruption and confirmed that FIFA has officially cancelled the fixture. They also pledged to update fans about refunds for tickets bought in advance.
Currently, both Malawi and Equatorial Guinea occupy mid-table positions in Group H of the CAF qualifiers. Malawi sits in 4th place with 10 points from eight matches, while Equatorial Guinea is right behind in 5th place, also on 10 points.
With very slim hopes of advancing, this fixture would have been crucial for both sides in their push for a playoff spot. But now, their campaign rests on the outcomes of the remaining matches.
