2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Egypt vs Guinea-Bissau – Preview
Egypt are set to wrap up their qualification campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday when they take on Guinea-Bissau in the final group game.
The Pharaohs, already assured of a place at next year’s global showpiece, head into the final Group A fixture with confidence after Mohamed Salah’s brace in a 3-0 win over Djibouti sealed their qualification.
The Liverpool forward’s goals not only secured Egypt’s ticket to the tournament but also made him Africa’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifiers with 20 goals, surpassing legends Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Moumouni Dagano, and Islam Slimani.
Hossam Hassan’s men have been dominant throughout the campaign, winning seven of their nine matches, scoring 19 goals, and conceding just two. With 23 points from a possible 27, they sit comfortably atop Group A, behind only Tunisia in total points across the continent.
While Egypt’s objective on Sunday will be to maintain their unbeaten record and give home fans a final celebration, Guinea-Bissau will be fighting for pride. Luis Boa Morte’s side saw their slim qualification hopes vanish after a costly defeat to Ethiopia in the previous round.
Now sitting fourth with 10 points, just one above Ethiopia, the Djurtus risk slipping further if they fail to get a result in Cairo.
For Egypt, the clash at the Cairo International Stadium presents an opportunity to reinforce their dominance and momentum ahead of preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year.
For Guinea-Bissau, it’s a chance to bow out of the qualifiers with respect against one of Africa’s finest sides.
