Algeria secured a 3-1 victory over Botswana in their round five game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at the Francistown Sports Complex on March 21, 2025.
This result means the Desert Foxes have reclaimed the top spot in Group E with 12 points, the same as Mozambique, but with a superior goal difference.
The game commenced with Algeria asserting dominance through ball possession, yet their initial attempts lacked penetration. Botswana, resilient in defense, sought opportunities on the counter, with Kabelo Seakanyeng’s individual brilliance nearly breaking the deadlock.
However, it was Algeria who capitalized first, as Amine Gouiri scored in the 44th minute, granting his team a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
The second half witnessed heightened intensity. In the 52nd minute, Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura exploited defensive lapses, skillfully navigating past the goalkeeper to double the lead.
Botswana responded with vigor, and in the 70th minute, Tebogo Kopelang reduced the deficit, converting a rebound following a set-piece situation.
Despite this resurgence, Algeria maintained composure. Amoura struck again in the 74th minute, seizing upon defensive disarray to restore the two-goal cushion. Botswana’s late efforts were thwarted by Algeria’s disciplined defense and strategic game management.
Algeria will next play at home against Mozambique in a top-of-the-table clash on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
