Ghana’s national team coach, Otto Addo, has highlighted England as the favorites to top Group L in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Black Stars are grouped alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, setting up a challenging campaign for the West African side.
Addo, 50, emphasized the importance of treating every opponent with respect. “I approach every match as a special occasion,” he told Ghanafa.org.
“England are favorites in this group, but it’s crucial that we do not underestimate any team. Each game carries equal importance in our preparation and mindset.”
England, who reached the quarter-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, are expected to lead the group, while Croatia, the 2018 runners-up, provide a stern test for Ghana.
Panama, making only their second World Cup appearance, will face the Black Stars in their opening fixture on Wednesday, June 17. Ghana will then meet England on June 23 before concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
After two consecutive group-stage exits, Addo is determined to guide Ghana beyond the first round. “Our goal is to progress to the next stage. The team has prepared well and understands the challenges ahead.
Every player knows what is expected on the field,” he added, signaling a renewed focus and ambition for the national squad.
The Black Stars will rely on a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talent to navigate a competitive group.
Addo’s pragmatic approach balances respect for the opposition with confidence in his squad’s ability to rise to the occasion.
Ghana’s campaign will be closely watched by fans eager to see the team build on its rich World Cup history, while also testing itself against some of the strongest sides in international football.
