2026 Women’s AFCON: Ghana take big step toward qualification with big win over Egypt
Ghana’s women’s national team, the Black Queens, have taken a giant step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This followed a 3-0 win over Egypt on Tuesday evening at the Suez Canal Stadium in Cairo in the first leg of their final round of qualifying.
Striker Doris Boaduwaa scored the opener three minutes away from half-time.
The Hapoel Jerusalem star picked on a through ball from Jennifer Cudjoe, pushed to her right before firing past the goalkeeper in the 42nd minute.
Just two minutes after the break, the 2024 Women’s AFCON second runners-up doubled their lead but it was ruled out for offside.
Egypt was reduced to ten players after Habiba Issam was sent off for a foul on Grace Asantewaa.
Five minutes away from time, Mary Amponsah flattered the hosts by tapping in the second from a set-piece before Grace Asantewaa sealed the win with a third goal in the 93rd minute.
The reverse fixture will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, October 28, with the winner over the two ties sealing qualification to next year’s Women’s AFCON in Morocco.
