2026 WCQ: Benin tighten grip on Group C as South Africa stumble and Nigeria stay in contention

The race for qualification from Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers remains wide open after a dramatic ninth round of matches saw South Africa drop crucial points, Nigeria keep their hopes alive, and Benin take control at the top.

In Durban, South Africa were held to a frustrating goalless draw by ten-man Zimbabwe, a result that leaves Hugo Broos’ side second in the group with 15 points — two behind Benin.

Despite enjoying numerical superiority for nearly half an hour after Knowledge Musona’s red card in the 63rd minute, Bafana Bafana failed to capitalise, missing several key chances before seeing defender Mbokazi dismissed in stoppage time.

The stalemate means South Africa must now beat Rwanda on the final day to stand any chance of automatic qualification.

The dropped points also open the door for both Nigeria and Benin, who remain firmly in the hunt.

Nigeria, meanwhile, survived a tense encounter in Maseru to claim a narrow 2-1 victory over Lesotho.

Captain William Troost-Ekong broke the deadlock early in the second half, before Akor Adams — set up brilliantly by Victor Osimhen — added a second ten minutes from time.

Lesotho pulled one back through Kalake, but the Super Eagles held firm to claim all three points.

The result lifts Nigeria to 14 points, just one behind South Africa and three off leaders Benin.

With one match remaining, they now face a decisive showdown against the Beninese — a fixture that promises to be both a West African derby and a potential winner-takes-all battle for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

In Kigali, Benin continued their impressive run with a vital 1-0 win over Rwanda.

Substitute Tosin Aiyegun scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute after an assist from Romaric Amoussou, sealing three valuable points for Gernot Rohr’s men.

The Cheetahs’ disciplined defensive display and late attacking efficiency proved enough to keep them at the summit of Group C with 17 points.

As the qualification campaign heads into its final chapter, Benin’s fate now lies entirely in their own hands.

A win against Nigeria would send them to the World Cup for the first time in their history, while South Africa and Nigeria both remain within striking distance should the leaders slip.

The stage is set for a thrilling finale — one that could see Group C decided by the narrowest of margins.
