2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Mozambique vs Guinea - Preview

Mozambique and Guinea face off this Thursday in what promises to be a cagey encounter in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. With just two rounds of matches remaining in Group G, both sides know the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Mozambique aiming to make a statement

The Mambas currently sit third in Group G, level on 15 points with Uganda. A victory could propel them into second place, while even a draw might be enough depending on other results.

After suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Uganda, Mozambique bounced back strongly with a 2-0 win over Botswana at home, reigniting their qualification hopes.

Guinea out to maintain momentum

Guinea, sitting on 10 points, remain mathematically in contention. The Syli National must win to keep their World Cup dream alive and add pressure to the teams above them.

With four points from their last two outings, Guinea approach this fixture with renewed belief and determination.

Speaking ahead of the game, Guinea’s third assistant coach, Mamadouba Sylla, outlined the team’s motivation and long-term focus.

“We want to use these final matches to rebuild our squad for the next Africa Cup of Nations. We need to restore confidence to the people of Guinea. (…) Despite difficulties with some sick players, we’ve called up young talents to rebuild our team, and that starts with a victory,” he said.

The Syli National will also be seeking revenge after Mozambique’s narrow 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture in Conakry last June, a loss that still lingers in the minds of the Guinean players.
