2026 FIFA World Cup: Egypt placed in Group G with Belgium, Iran and New Zealand

Egypt will enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup with pride and renewed belief after being drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand.

The Pharaohs, Africa’s most decorated national team with seven AFCON titles, have a rich football history, even if their World Cup story has been less glamorous.

Their journey began in 1934 when Abdulrahman Fawzi scored twice in a 2-4 loss to Hungary, becoming the first African player to score at a World Cup. His goals stood alone for the continent until Morocco’s breakthrough in 1986. It was a defining moment that placed Egypt on the global football map.

In 1990, Egypt returned with grit, holding both the Netherlands and England to 0-0 draws. Tied with Ireland on points, they lost out on progression due to a random draw—an unusual and heartbreaking exit after such disciplined performances.

The 2018 tournament brought emotional highs and lows. Mohamed Salah, battling back from injury, scored a calm penalty against Saudi Arabia, while Essam El Hadary became the oldest World Cup player at 45, saving a penalty and winning Player of the Match in the defeat to Russia.

Under coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt dominated CAF Group A to secure qualification for the expanded 2026 edition, marking their fourth World Cup appearance and first since 2018.
