Egypt’s U20 national team made a winning start to the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on Sunday night, defeating South Africa’s U20 national team 1-0.
The host nation is aiming to conquer the continent to successfully host and win the tournament.
In their opening game in Group A on Sunday, staged at the Cairo International Stadium, the Egyptians faced a tough time with the opponent South Africa proving to be a tough nut to crack.
Despite the impressive performance from both teams, neither side could get on the scoresheet and had to go into the break on level pegging.
In the second half, Mohamed Abdallah broke the deadlock of the game in the 63rd minute after he was set up by Mohamed Raafat.
The forward fired a low drive that beat the South African goalkeeper despite his best effort.

The win takes Egypt to the top of the Group A standings. Zambia and Tanzania follows in second and third in the group while South Africa sits bottom of the group.
