Nigeria’s Flying Eagles defeated the Young Pharaohs of Egypt on penalties on Sunday afternoon to win bronze at the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The two youth national teams locked horns in the third-place match of the tournament today in a game played at the 30 June Stadium.
Egypt started the game on a bright note and scored after just three minutes into the first half.
Omar Osama equalised after he was set up by Mahmoud Labib to shoot the host nation into an early lead.
Although Nigeria’s Flying Eagles recovered from the early setback to play some fine football, the team could not take their chances and had to go into the lead trailing.
However, two minutes after the restart, Nigeria restored parity to the game thanks to a strike from Bidemi Amole after he was assisted by Divine Oliseh.
With no winner in 90 minutes, the game had to be decided through a penalty shootout.
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles came out soaring and secured a 4-1 victory at the end of the shootout to go home with the bronze medal.
