Ghana and Egypt will renew their U20 Africa Cup of Nations rivalry with a quarterfinal meeting at the Suez Stadium on Monday, May 12, at 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT).

This will be their seventh encounter at the tournament, having previously met six times, each side winning three, with two of those victories coming via penalties.

Their first tournament clash came in the 1991 semifinals when Egypt, as hosts, secured a 1-0 win en route to their second title.

Ghana, however, responded two years later, defeating Egypt 3-1 in the semifinals to lift their first championship. In 1997, Ghana claimed a narrow 1-0 group stage win, advancing alongside Morocco as Egypt bowed out early.

The 2001 semifinals produced a thrilling contest, with Ghana edging Egypt 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, though they fell short in the final.

Twelve years later, Egypt exacted some revenge, defeating Ghana 2-1 in the group stage before their dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout triumph in the final after another 1-1 draw.

Ghana enters this clash as Group C winners, following a 1-1 draw with DR Congo and back-to-back 1-0 wins over Senegal and the Central African Republic.

This is their third quarterfinal appearance, having won seven and drawn three of their 10 direct knockout matches at the finals.

Notably, they have reached the last four in three of their last four tournaments.

Meanwhile, Egypt finished third in Group A, recovering from a 4-1 defeat to Sierra Leone with a 1-0 win over Tanzania.

They are seeking their eighth semifinal appearance and their first since 2013, when they last advanced beyond the group stage.

However, their inconsistent form, including a negative goal difference, presents a significant challenge as they aim to defend home turf.

The winner in this clash qualifies for the 2025 U20 World Cup.
