2025 U17 World Cup: Mexico edge Ivory Coast to claim vital win in Group F
Ivory Coast fell to their second defeat at the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup after a narrow 1-0 loss to Mexico on Friday at the Aspire Zone in Al Rayyan, Doha.
The young Elephants began the match with promise, pressing high and creating the first clear chances of the game.
In the ninth minute, Ismaël Touré came close to putting Ivory Coast ahead, but his effort was well blocked by the Mexican defence.
Moments later, Alyho Haidara nearly broke the deadlock with a well-timed run and a low shot that skimmed just wide of the post after a clever through ball from Hubert Yao.
Mexico responded with determination and soon began to impose their rhythm.
Midfielder Gaël Garcia twice tested Ivorian goalkeeper Christ Kouassi, whose sharp reflexes kept his side level before half-time.
Despite Mexico’s increasing possession, Ivory Coast maintained defensive composure, managing to reach the interval with the score still goalless.
After the break, the balance of play shifted decisively in favour of the Mexicans.
They increased the intensity, stretching the Ivorian backline and dominating the midfield duels.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 74th minute when Ian Olvera rose highest to meet a corner, heading firmly past Kouassi to give Mexico a deserved 1-0 lead.
Ivory Coast attempted to rally in the final stages, introducing fresh legs and pushing men forward, but their efforts lacked precision in the attacking third.
Mexico’s defence, well-marshalled and disciplined, held firm to secure a vital three points in Group F.
The result leaves Ivory Coast bottom of the group with no points from two matches, while Mexico revive their hopes of qualification for the knockout stage.
For the Ivorian side, the defeat is a setback that puts significant pressure on their final group fixture, where they must win to stand any chance of progressing.
Despite the loss, coach Souleymane Coulibaly can take some encouragement from his team’s early performance and individual flashes of promise.
The match, however, highlighted the need for greater concentration in the closing stages and improved execution in front of goal — areas that will require immediate attention if the young Elephants are to bounce back.
