2025 FIFA U20 World Cup: South Africa beat USA 2-1 to book place in Round 16

South Africa secured a spot in the Round of 16 stage of the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup on Sunday with a 2-1 victory against the USA.

The Group E clash at El Teniente Stadium in Rancagua saw both teams battling for top positions. While the USA aimed to maintain their lead, South Africa needed a win to guarantee progression and avoid facing a tougher opponent in the next round.

The Americans struck first in the 12th minute through Noah Cobb, putting early pressure on the South Africans. However, the young Amajita showed great resilience, drawing level just five minutes later after an own goal by Joshua Wynder in the 17th minute.

That equaliser energised the South African side, and they took control of the game heading into halftime. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Gomolemo Kekana fired home to give South Africa a 2–1 lead before the break.

In the second half, the United States dominated possession and piled on pressure, but South Africa’s defense held firm, showing great discipline and determination to protect their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The result saw South Africa finish second in Group E with six points, the same tally as leaders USA, but behind on goal difference.

The victory not only confirmed their place in the knockout stages but also marked one of the standout performances of the group phase.
