The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are through to the Round 16 stage of the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup after finishing third in Group F with four points from three matches.

The team wrapped up their group campaign on Sunday night with a nervy 1-1 draw with Colombia

On the matchday, Colombia took the lead in the 51st minute through Kener González, punishing a lapse in Nigeria’s defence and putting the South Americans firmly in control.

For much of the second half, Colombia dictated play, pressing for a second goal as the Eagles struggled to find their rhythm.

However, Nigeria’s persistence paid off late in the game when they were awarded a penalty. Captain Daniel Bameyi stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to level the score and secure a crucial point for his side.

The draw was enough to push Nigeria into the knockout stage, where they will face tournament favourites Argentina.

Colombia, meanwhile, finished top of the group and advanced as unbeaten leaders.

While the next challenge against Argentina promises to be a tough one, the Flying Eagles can take confidence from their fighting spirit and ability to deliver under pressure.

A lot will be expected from captain Daniel Bameyi and his teammates in the knockout stage.
