Brazilian side Palmeiras laboured to secure a 2-0 win over Egyptian outfit Al Ahly on Thursday evening at MetLife Stadium.
The two clubs locked horns today in their second match in Group A at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Palmeiras took the lead in the 49th minute when Wessam Abou Ali, attempting to clear a cross, inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, leaving the Al Ahly goalkeeper with no chance.
Just 10 minutes later, Flaco Lopez doubled Palmeiras’ advantage. The striker latched onto a perfectly weighted pass, went one-on-one with the keeper, and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner with a clinical finish.
Shortly after the game, the match was suspended by the match officials due to adverse weather conditions. The game resumed after some 30 minutes, but did not see any more goals despite the efforts of the two teams.
The 2-0 win earned Palmeiras their first win of the tournament, putting the side in a good position to advance to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup.
For Al Ahly, the Egyptian giants must beat FC Porto in their final group game or they will be eliminated from the tournament.
