2025 Arab Cup: Madjid Bougherra urges focus and determination as Algeria prepare for Bahrain test

Madjid Bougherra has insisted Algeria’s A’ national team are fully prepared for their second Arab Cup fixture against Bahrain, stressing that lessons learned from their opening match will guide a stronger performance.

Speaking at Friday’s press conference alongside forward Yassine Benzia, the coach underlined the squad’s commitment to improving after their draw with Sudan.

“We will give it our all in this tournament, right up to the last match. We reviewed our match against Sudan and analyzed it, learning from our mistakes. We will approach Saturday’s match against Bahrain with the right mindset and will do everything we can to win,” Bougherra said.

The coach also addressed the red card received by Adam Ounas in the Sudan match, noting both the seriousness of the offence and the team’s continued support for the player.

“Adam Ounas knows very well that he made a big mistake after receiving a red card in the first match against Sudan. We’re behind him,” he affirmed, making clear the winger remains part of the group’s plans despite his moment of indiscipline.

Criticism surrounding Islam Slimani’s performance was also raised, with Bougherra offering a measured response.

“He wasn’t the Slimani we know because of the circumstances. I’m counting on him as a substitute and he knows it,” he explained, signalling confidence in the veteran striker’s ability to contribute even in a reduced role.

Looking ahead to the meeting with Bahrain, Bougherra highlighted the importance of maintaining concentration in a tightly contested tournament.

“Tomorrow, we will be better prepared and we will aim for victory. The important thing is that we didn’t lose against Sudan, and every match is like a final for the Arab teams,” he said.

He stressed that no team is a favorite, urging his squad to remain cautious and disciplined as the competition intensifies.

On potential squad changes, the coach kept his plans deliberately vague, pointing to several fitness considerations within the group.

“As for the changes, we’ll know tomorrow. Some players are returning from injury,” he noted, hinting that adjustments could be made but offering no specific details.

As Algeria seeks its first win of the campaign, Bougherra’s message was clear, composure, unity and hard work will define their approach.

With Bahrain posing a difficult challenge, the team enters their second match aiming to convert their reflections from the Sudan encounter into a performance that restores confidence and strengthens their position in the group.
