2025 AFCON: Hugo Broos announces final South Africa squad for tournament

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has unveiled his final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The announcement follows weeks of speculation, particularly after Broos named a 54-man preliminary squad that included Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane. Zwane, who returned to action over the weekend for the first time since a September injury, has ultimately been left out of the final roster.

As expected, the squad is heavily represented by players from Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, reflecting the central role both clubs have played in the national team’s recent success. Broos will be relying on these key figures to steer South Africa’s campaign in the tournament.

Burnley striker Lyle Foster makes a return to the squad after missing the previous AFCON due to mental health concerns. Additionally, Shandre Campbell and Tylon Smith earn their first call-ups to the national team.

CAF rules allow national teams to include up to four extra players beyond the standard 23-man squad to cover potential injuries. Broos has named a 25-man squad, making use of two additional spots with approval from SAFA.

Bafana Bafana are drawn in Group B alongside Angola, Zimbabwe, and Egypt, with their campaign kicking off against Angola on December 22. SAFA has confirmed Mduduzi Shabalala, Iqraam Rayners, and Thabo Moloisane as standby players.
