Burkina Faso secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a composed 2–0 victory over Sudan, finishing second in Group E behind Algeria.
The Stallions struck early to take control of a tense encounter, with Frank Traoré opening the scoring in the 16th minute. His well-taken effort settled nerves and allowed Burkina Faso to dictate the tempo, knowing victory would guarantee safe passage to the last 16.
Sudan had moments where they threatened to change the course of the match, most notably when Al Gozoli Nooh rattled the post after missing a penalty. But Burkina Faso remained disciplined, controlling possession and limiting clear chances as the game goes on.
Any lingering doubt was removed late on when Kouassi fired home in the 85th minute, capping off a confident team performance and sparking celebrations among the Burkina Faso players and supporters.
The win takes Burkina Faso to six points from three matches. They had begun their campaign with a 2–1 victory over Equatorial Guinea before falling to group winners Algeria, and this result ensured their progress without having to rely on other outcomes.
For Sudan, defeat means they finish the group stage on three points after a spirited but ultimately frustrating campaign. Despite their efforts, they were unable to find a breakthrough against a well-organised Burkina Faso side.
Burkina Faso now move into the knockout rounds with momentum and belief, having shown resilience, control and timely finishing when it mattered most.
