2024 WAFCON: Morocco beat Ghana on penalties to reach final
Morocco showed impressive fighting spirit on Tuesday night, beating Ghana 4-2 on penalties to advance to the final of the 2024 CAF Women’s AFrica Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Despite fielding a strong team, Morocco struggled to take hold of the match as Ghana dominated the early proceedings.
After piling a lot of pressure on the hosts, the Black Queens of Ghana broke the deadlock in the 26th minute.
Teenager Stella Nyamekye equalised after forcing the ball over the line to shoot his team into the lead.
Although Morocco would slowly crawl into the game, they could not score and went into the break trailing.
However, after recess, the Moroccans showed real intent, taking the game to the Black Queens and piling a lot of pressure.
After several attempts, Morocco found the breakthrough courtesy of a strike from Sakina Ouzraoui Diki in the 55th minute.
Morocco would continue to dominate after scoring, but could not add to their tally. Ghana also made inroads, but all efforts to score could not materialise as the 90 minutes ended in a stalemate.
With no goals in extra time as well, it all came down to penalties. In the shootout, Morocco triumphed over Ghana 4-2 to set up a final with Nigeria.
