There was no winner on Friday evening when Ghana played against Mali in the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The women’s national teams of the two countries locked horns today in a game serving as their second Group C match at the ongoing tournament in Morocco.
The Ghana Black Queens went into the game on the back of a 2-0 defeat to South Africa in their opening match, a result that meant they needed to beat Mali today to improve their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage of the tournament.
Mali, on the other hand, secured a narrow victory over Tanzania in their opening match.
Under pressure to win, the Black Queens of Ghana mounted early pressure on Mali on the matchsay and scored after just six minutes into the first half.
Winger Alice Kusi found the net after a scramble on the goal line, which left a Malian defender injured and in need of medical attention.
That goal gave Ghana the advantage at halftime, but the team could not hold on to the finish line.
Mali came in strong in the second half to force the match to end in a draw after Aissata Traore scored in the 52nd minute to restore parity to the game.
After the 1-1 draw today, Mali temporarily sits top of the Group C standings ahead of South Africa.
Ghana is in third place with one point above Tanzania, with no points.
