Ghana’s Black Queens are back among the continent’s elite after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Algeria in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final on Saturday in Berkane.

It was a tense afternoon that ended in celebration, with goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan stealing the spotlight by saving two penalties to seal a 4-2 win in the shootout. Her commanding presence in goal ensured Ghana’s first semi-final appearance in over ten years.

The Queens thought they had gone ahead in the first half when Stella Nyamekye found the net, but VAR denied the goal. Still, they dominated the half with Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah testing Algeria’s backline.

Coach Kim Bjorkegren’s substitutions brought new energy, with Evelyn Badu and Princella Adubea entering the fray. Badu nearly won it late but failed to connect cleanly.

Extra time saw more chances, especially for Boaduwaa, who missed two one-on-ones.

In the end, it came down to nerves and Konlan’s brilliance.

Ghana will now meet hosts Morocco in what promises to be a high-stakes semi-final clash.
