2024 WAFCON: Algeria strike early to beat Botswana in first match at tournament

Algeria kicked off their campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 1-0 victory against Botswana on Sunday, July 6.

The tournament being hosted by Morocco commenced on Saturday with a pulsating 2-2 draw between the host and Zambia.

Today, Algeria had their turn to play their first match at the tournament, taking on Botswana in a Group B encounter.

In the close contest that ensued between the two teams, a single goal was enough to settle the game.

Experienced midfielder Ghoutia Karchouni scored the only goal of the match in the 10th minute, propelling Algeria to an important 1-0 victory at the end of the contest.

In the other Group B game played on Sunday, Nigeria smashed Tunisia 3-0 in their opening match at the tournament.

The result puts Nigeria at the top of the Group B standings, followed by Algeria.

Group C will be activated at the 2024 WAFCON on Monday when defending champions South Africa take on the Black Queens of Ghana.
