Morocco head coach Tarik Sektioui has lauded his players following their victory over Senegal, which has secured them a spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) final.
The Atlas Lions secured a place in the final after beating Senegal on penalties (5-3), following a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time on Tuesday evening.
Speaking after Tuesday’s tense encounter, Sektioui described the win as a moment of immense pride for both his squad and Moroccan fans.
“This joy on your faces today says it all,” he told Arriyadia TV. “We are always at the service of national football, and whenever successes come, it is an honour to see Moroccans smile. Thank Allah, it warms the heart.”
Sektioui praised his players’ dedication and passion for representing their country. “I have always told the players that I love them and am honoured to work with them. They carry Morocco in their hearts, and that devotion is never overlooked.”
Despite the win, Sektioui acknowledged the challenge posed by Senegal, the defending CHAN champions.
“The match was very difficult. Senegal is a highly skilled, well-organised side with great balance in both defence and attack. Before facing us, they had only conceded one goal in the tournament.”
The Moroccan coach also noted the strain of a packed fixture schedule.
“Perhaps some fatigue showed on our side due to the continuous matches and limited recovery time. The players have not had enough time to fully recharge physically.”
Still, Sektioui hailed the victory as a crucial step toward Morocco’s ultimate goal.
“This win is significant in itself, but starting tomorrow, we are even more motivated to achieve the bigger goal: winning the cup.”
Morocco will contest the CHAN final for the third time in history, having previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2022.
They will face Madagascar next Saturday at 4:00 pm at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
