2024 CAF Awards: A look at countries with most winners ahead of Monday’s ceremony

Samuel Etoo

The 2024 CAF Awards will take place on Monday in Marrakech, Morocco, gathering the top players from the African continent to celebrate excellence in football.

This ceremony will mark another significant moment in the history of the Men’s Player of the Year award, which has undergone various iterations since its inception by France Football magazine in 1970, with the CAF taking over in 1992.

Cameroon leads the way with an impressive total of 11 awards, beginning with Roger Milla in 1976 and culminating with Samuel Eto’o’s four victories, the last in 2010. Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria are tied for second place, each boasting six awards.

Côte d’Ivoire’s tally includes contributions from Yaya Touré, who won consecutively from 2011 to 2014, and Didier Drogba, who secured two titles.

Nigeria’s six awards are attributed to notable players such as Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Osimhen, and Rashidi Yekini, with Osimhen being the most recent winner.

Ghana follows closely with five awards, highlighted by Abedi Pele’s three consecutive wins.

Five nominees are in contention for the 2024 award, including Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi, Ademola Lookman and Ronwen Williams.

The winner will be announced at the Palais des Congrès, with the ceremony commencing at 19:00 local time.
