Appointed as Tunisia’s head coach just a few months ago, Mondher Kebaier is still in the process of shaping his squad and establishing his ideas with the Carthage Eagles. Since taking charge, the Tunisian manager has overseen four matches, using that time to assess his options and evaluate the players best suited to his system. One notable absence from his first selections, however, has been Wahbi Khazri.

The Saint-Étienne midfielder, long considered one of Tunisia’s most influential players, was left out of Kebaier’s initial squad lists. His omission raised eyebrows among supporters, given his experience and importance to the national team in recent years. Yet his inconsistent form at club level may explain the coach’s decision. After a brilliant 2018–2019 campaign in Ligue 1, Khazri has struggled to maintain the same level of performance this season, delivering limited statistics and less impact on the pitch.

As the qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations approach, the question of his return has become a major talking point. Fans and observers alike are wondering whether Kebaier will give the attacking midfielder another chance or continue to rely on other options. The situation has added extra anticipation to the announcement of the next squad.

On Wednesday, the Tunisian Football Federation confirmed that the list of players selected for the upcoming qualifying matches would be unveiled Thursday evening on its official website. This will mark Kebaier’s third squad list since taking over the national team, and all eyes will be on the names included. For many, the presence or absence of Khazri will be one of the most closely watched decisions.

Despite his recent struggles, Khazri remains a player capable of making a difference. His technical ability, creativity, and experience at both club and international levels could still prove valuable for Tunisia, especially in crucial qualification fixtures. Even when not at his best, he brings leadership and unpredictability that few others in the squad can match. These qualities could weigh in his favor as Kebaier finalizes his choices.

The official verdict is expected this Thursday evening, November 7, when the federation publishes the squad. Until then, speculation continues over whether the Saint-Étienne man will be recalled to bolster the team’s attacking options.

Tunisia’s upcoming schedule leaves little room for error. For the opening two matchdays of the AFCON 2021 qualifiers, the Carthage Eagles will face Libya on November 15 before taking on Equatorial Guinea on November 19. Two positive results would allow Kebaier to start his tenure strongly and set the tone for the campaign.

Whether Khazri features or not, these matches will provide an early indication of the coach’s vision and the direction he intends to take with the national team.
